Despite its reputation for polo, private schools, and the picturesque Pantiles, Royal Tunbridge Wells - a posh town just 45 minutes from London - was shockingly named the worst place to visit near London.

This surprising verdict came from a recent survey of the UK's best towns and villages by Which?, where 5,333 readers deemed the town unworthy of a visit, giving it a lowly overall score of 70 per cent.

The town was particularly criticised for its supposed lack of attractiveness, scenery, and peace and quiet, managing only two stars in these categories. Its highest rating was four stars for food and drink, while tourist attractions scraped a middling three stars.

While Royal Tunbridge Wells did manage to outperform Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire and Matlock Bath in Derbyshire, and Bodmin in Cornwall which ranked a full 10 per cent lower, these locations are not in direct competition as they are significantly further from London.

It's worth noting that not every town and village in the UK was included in the survey, but with 59 participants, the result is still significant. However, if you're not easily swayed by public opinion, there's plenty to enjoy in this pretty town, and it's conveniently located just 45 minutes from London.

It has been a renowned spa town for 400 years, and nowadays there are still a number of spas you can visit including Champneys - conveniently located on the High Street.
