Wow, this was a busy weekend. Pride Month has brought many festivities, including the Pride Parade in Oak Bluffs. I hope everyone had fun. And of course, the high school Class Night and graduation were this weekend as well. Congratulations to all the graduating seniors and their families.
Happy birthday to Brooke Leahy, who celebrated on June 9, Jen Passafiume on June 12, Amy Da Silva and Kara Thibodeau on June 14, and Gayle Poggi on June 16.
The Friends of the Edgartown Council on Aging are holding their annual meeting on Friday, June 21, at 11 am at the Anchors location on Dock Street. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. Their mission continues to be that of financial support for the Council on Aging’s many programs and services, etc., available to our precious seniors. This mission becomes so much more important and necessary every day, and they welcome your support.
On June 15, you can enjoy Harborfest in Oak Bluffs, from 10 am to 6 pm. Shop at retail booths, enjoy food and drinks, meet local artisans, learn about Vineyard nonprofits, and more. The rain date is Sunday, June 16.
Brazil Fest is happening on June 16, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Ag Hall. Organized by M.V. Mediation, the Building Bridges Coalition is made up of local organizations and individuals who share a vision of fostering inclusivity, understanding, and appreciation for the cultural mosaic that defines our community. This event features an array of fun activities, performances, and food experiences that highlight the unique flavors and sounds of Brazil, coupled with some familiar local Island favorites. Everyone is welcome.
The Edgartown School’s eighth grade has returned from their trip to New York and Hershey, Pa., and will graduate on June 14, at 5 pm at the Old Whaling Church. On to high school! How can that be? This class holds a special place in my heart, as I had many of them in my first homeroom classroom during the COVID days. We made some great memories during difficult times. Congratulations to all the kids and their families.
The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is excited to unveil a season brimming with cultural enrichment, historical exploration, and artistic celebration. With a diverse lineup of events and exhibits, the museum remains a beacon of community, culture, and learning on Martha’s Vineyard. Last week was a hard one for many of us on M.V., with the passing of several cherished Islanders, including Dick Kelly, Janice Haynes, and Ron Rappaport. I had the pleasure of knowing all of them, and each was a shining example of exuberance and charity. They will be missed. My condolences to their families and friends.
June 18 is the last day of school, and summer will officially be here for the kids. Please drive carefully and watch out for the kids as they venture out for summer fun.
