best montreal bars

Montreal has officially spiked the annual North America's 50 Best Bars list with a little local flavour. The spirited showdown of top watering holes across the continent, from Canada to the Caribbean, saw Montreal bars take a double shot at the prestigious ranking and both land.

The competition was stiff, featuring the best from nightlife capitals like New York, Las Vegas, and Mexico City. A panel of 270 anonymous industry experts, including bartenders, bar owners and well-travelled cocktail connoisseurs, cast their votes based on innovation, ambiance, and quality of service, ensuring each selected bar meets a gold standard of excellence.

As the largest city — and one of the only on the continent — to resist prohibition in the early 20th century, it’s no surprise that Montreal (then nicknamed "Paris of the North" and "Sin City") maintains its reputation as a first-rate place to knock back some booze. From student-packed dives on Saint-Laurent to ritzy speakeasies to 5 à 7s at neighbourhood wine bars, Montrealers are getting hammered at some of the finest drinkeries on this side of the Atlantic.

But don’t just take our word for it. 50 Best, described on its site as "the leading authority in global gastronomy and the international drinks scene," ranked two Montreal bars among the best in North America this year. The same organization has 15 Montreal establishments on its expanded list of exceptional local bars and restaurants to discover (well, 16 if you count the recently shuttered Maison Publique — RIP… pour one out for Publique).

The people behind some of Montreal's trendiest, award-winning bars have launched a new venture. Bon Délire, described by Groupe Barroco as a "curated dive bar with an elevated twist," opened in Saint-Henri this spring.

Owners say they have replicated the feeling of classic '90s "hole-in-the-wall" dive, complete with a "hazy, neon-lit bar," leopard-print pool table, free popcorn and space for live performances. But they also promise some Groupe Barroco "signature touches."

Montreal is a city that takes its cocktails seriously. From classic speakeasies to trendy new bars, the drinks scene in Montreal is constantly evolving, pushing the boundaries of mixology and creativity.

This year, several local bars have been named finalists for the highly coveted Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards. The awards recognize excellence in the global spirits industry and are considered one of the most prestigious accolades in the cocktail world.

Montreal ranks highly on plenty of top-tier lists, but perhaps none more culinarily influential than the 50 Best lists, which rate restaurants and bars across the world. Three of Montreal's best restaurants and one bar have made it to the site for the first time — but not in the way you might expect.

The new rankings come from the 50 Best: Discovery section, where high-level restaurants and bars that received votes in the 50 Best lists are highlighted. To be included in the Discovery section, an establishment needs to have been chosen by the experts and critics whose votes determine the top 50 lists the site is known for.

As we come to the end of our 20's, and are finally taking the steps into our 30's we still want to go out and have fun, but don't have the same expectations or wants from our evening out as maybe before.

As we settle down and our relationships become more serious, and our jobs become careers, what we are looking for from a night out changes. As our lives are often busier and more serious, a night out is often an opportunity to catch up with friends and on the week just past, so therefore maybe you would prefer a place to go where you can talk.

Whether you've accepted it or not, back to school season is here for us Montreal students. Yes, this means that you're soon going to have to start thinking about things like learning how to hold a pen again or how to take notes AND listen at the same time. There is one saving grace, however: going out at the end of the day with all of the friends you didn't get to see over the summer.

When it comes to partying in Montreal the options are seemingly endless, which is great, but it also makes it a bit tricky to choose where to go, especially when you're a student. You want somewhere that you can be sure is going to be a good time, but that isn't going to cost you half of your tuition. Trust me, I know the struggle. As a Montreal student myself, I've tried out a number of bars, pubs and clubs in the city - maybe more than I should admit - but I've now found a few go-to favourites to celebrate returning to school.
