Patients are being put through their paces in a new programme to help them prepare for major surgery at local hospitals.

The Emergency Department at Southend Hospital is being expanded and modernised as part of an ambitious £8 million scheme. The cash injection will see the department redesigned to meet the needs of residents now and in the future.

Sam Jayasekara has been appointed as a Mesothelioma UK Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to provide nursing care and support for mesothelioma (asbestos-related cancer) patients in Essex. The post is funded by asbestos disease support charity, HASAG. Sam will be based at the Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford and will also cover Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s other general hospitals in Basildon and Southend.

Patients needing to see a respiratory specialist at Broomfield Hospital will now been seen more quickly, thanks to the introduction of an in-house Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team.

Patients will receive their scans more quickly and in more comfortable surroundings after a new facility opened at Basildon Hospital.

More space to treat patients is being made available in Southend Hospital’s Emergency Department. This will enable the hospital to provide seven extra major treatment spaces, including an improved waiting area, and a new location for the Urgent Treatment Centre.
