WSOF 33 results: 'Branch vs. Magalhaes' live streaming play-by-play updates

World Series of Fighting (WSOF) 33: "Branch vs. Magalhaes" airs live on NBC Sports Network TONIGHT (Oct. 7, 2016) from Kansas City Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The NBC Sports Network-televised show will feature David Branch putting his Light Heavyweight strap up against Vinny Magalhaes.

In addition, WSOF has booked WSOF 25 tournament winner Brian Foster to face off with Luiz "Buscape" Firmino and the promotional debut of Shawn "The Savage" Jordan against Ashley Gooch.

For those of you expecting a Justin Gaethje title defense, that fight has been scrapped due to Ozzy Dugulubgov falling ill the day of the fight.

All of the action-packed WSOF 33 televised bouts air this evening on NBC Sports Network, starting at 11 p.m. ET! WSOF 33 PLAY-BY-PLAY UPDATES:

David Branch vs. Vinny Magalhaes

Magalhaes is 14-7 coming into tonight's fight as the No. 1 contender, sporting black and white trunks, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada. Branch is 18-3 and a dual weight class champion, but only the Light Heavyweight title is on the line tonight. He's sporting white trunks for this fight and fighting out of Brooklyn, New York. Our referee in charge for the main event is Dan Miragliotta. No touch of the gloves before the opening bell.

Round 1: David Branch charges forward and both men feel out the range. Branch knocks Magalhaes down but doesn't jump on top of him sensing it was a phantom fade to lure him into the guard. He was right as Magalhaes pops right back up. Magalhaes comes forward with a flurry but can't get a grip on Branch who slips out of the clinch. Now Branch answers with a flurry forcing Magalhaes to cover up. Branch catches a leg kick then lets it go. Two minutes gone. Branch pops a left into Magalhaes' head. They circle in the center each looking for an opening. Branch once again breaks a clinch attempt and snaps off the jab. Overhand right just misses the sweet spot. Leg kicks are traded. Body shot for Branch. Left jab connects repeatedly for Branch. Magalhaes throws out a head kick Branch avoids. Branch keeps popping the left. Magalhaes goes for a flurry late including a head kick and Miragliotta has a hard time separating them. 10-9 Branch.

Round 2: Branch comes forward energetically to open R2, and Magalhaes again tries to clinch but can't keep ahold of Branch. Branch is mixing in the leg kicks but Magalhaes is landing in kind. Magalhaes has a four strike combo but Branch answers with a big left that rocks Magalhaes and tries to hammer it out on the ground. Maglahes squirms around on his back and finally Branch backs away and forces the stand up. Branch immediately nails him with another left hook and he's wobbled. He backs away and lets Magalhaes reset again then lands more lefts and rights. Magalhaes' face is a bloody mess. He backs away at 2:56 and forces another stand up, which comes very slowly. Miragliotta could stop this at almost any time. Magalhaes has 80 seconds left to survive this round and I don't know if he will. He tries a head kick and Branch ducks it easily. Another huge left hook lands. Both eyes are swollen and bruised for Magalhaes. I'd be shocked if he didn't have a broken nose or orbital bone. Blowout 10-8 for Branch.

Round 3: A doctor had to clear Magalhaes before round three could begin. Magalhaes throws a few kicks to open the round. Branch keeps pushing forward ready to land the left hook at any time. They tie up and Branch shrugs Magalhaes off. Branch decks Magalhaes with the left at 2:05. I'm starting to wonder if Magalhaes can even see with the bruising and swelling he's experiencing. If he can then he's just really bad at blocking or avoiding Branch's offense. Two minutes left. Magalhaes misses with a head kick. Branch is mixing in body shots. Left jabs with impunity. Magalhaes has to cover up when Branch pressures him into the fence. Not as spectacular as R2 but Branch wins a decisive 10-9 all the same.

Round 4: We're into the championship rounds now and there doesn't seem to be much chance of Magalhaes becoming a champion. He'd need a miracle in this or the fifth round. He does land a good body kick at 0:59. Leg kick Magalhaes. Both fighters are moving at a much more measured pace now. Branch pops Magalhaes with two unchecked left hands. He's cutting off the angles and forcing Magalhaes backward into the fence. Magalhaes circles out at 3:12 and Branch throws a kick. Branch may be conserving his energy with footwork and faints, but he's practically leaping into his punches when he sees openings, such as the one that hurts Magalhaes at 4:18. Magalhaes throws a head kick that doesn't come close to hitting anything and backpedals to survive. His face is a mess. 10-9 again for Branch.

Round 5: Branch comes forward head hunting to open the final round and Magalhaes straight up flops to his back hoping to make something happen. Branch just lets him get back up. The left continues to tag Magalhaes again and again. If he doesn't get the finish he can walk away knowing he put on a clinic in his first Light Heavyweight title defense. Big right hook lands. It's hard to look at Magalhaes at this point especially in high definition. His features have been rearranged. If he was bleeding on top of that it would be a horror movie perfect for the Halloween season. Time is running out for a last second Hail Mary from Magalhaes. Branch just keeps landing combos with 85 seconds left. He's not being reckless but he's certainly feeling fearless. Magalhaes might as well run at Branch jump in the air and try to pull guard, or maybe run and dive for a leg and try for a late heel hook. Nope. Time ticks away and nothing happens. David Branch has pitched a shutout.

Final result: All three judges score it 50-44 for David Branch by unanimous decision.

Brian Foster vs. Luiz Firmino

Round 1: 19-6, gray trunks, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Florida is Firmino. 26-9, black and green trunks, fighting out of Englewood, Colorado is Foster. Our referee in charge is Mike England. Firmino pushes forward from the opening bell. Foster responds with a knee and a right hand and Firmino ducks under a possible head kick before using a leg lock attempt to sweep his way to the top. Firmino tries to pour on the hammers as Foster wriggles back and forth searching for an escape. When Firmino can posture up those left elbows look nasty. Foster goes for a triangle and gets an armbar and Firmino taps out -- then acts like he didn't after the fight is stopped! He walks around shaking his head no and the two meet in the middle of the Decagon and exchange words. The replay clearly shows Firmino tapped.

Final result: Brian Foster wins via submission at 3:14 of round one due to a triangle choke.

Jason High vs. Joao Zeferino

Round 1: Yellow trunks, 20-8, fighting out of Middletown, New York is Zeferino. Red trunks, 20-5, fighting out of Lenexa, Kansas is High. The referee in charge is Marc Wasem. High pulls guard for a guillotine choke early and is on top but Zeferino doesn't tap and is able to escape. They stand to trade again at 1:12. Zeferino comes forward with a flurry and High turns him around to throw knees at his legs. They break on their own at 2:15 as neither was getting much advantage. Zeferino lands a nice right hand. High throws a body kick. Zeferino hurts High with a punch and gets a takedown while he's still stunned. Now Zeferino is the one hunting for a submission and trying to soften High up with left elbows to the head. When High didn't get the quick submission most of the rest of this round went Zeferino's way, and he punctuated it with a head kick as High got back up before the bell. 10-9 Zeferino.

Round 2: Zeferino wastes no time decking High again seconds into R2, but High throws a head kick to make Zeferino back off a bit. Zeferino shoots for a double and gets it at 0:39. High has his back to the fence for a second, Zeferino pushes him down, High gets a reversal and stands up with his arms around Zeferino's waist. Zeferino turns to take his back, can't get it, but ends up with a takedown into guard. Wasem calls for more work as we hit the halfway point. He stands them up ten seconds later. High comes forward swinging. Zeferino powers High into the fence and gets a takedown with 85 seconds left. Wasem wants to see more. Zeferino throws right hands to the ribs. They're stood up again at 4:20. Zeferino moves as High spins with a kick then High does the same for him. 10-9 Zeferino again.

Round 3: High gets rocked with a right 43 seconds into the third round and it's stopped 5-6 seconds later even though High is arguing that he recovered on the ground and could have continued. The way High fell it's hard to say he made the wrong call, especially when he took two or three uncontested shots to the head before the stoppage.

Final result: Joao Zeferino via technical knockout at 0:51 of the third round.

John Howard vs. Abubakar Nurmagomedov

Round 1: 24-12, black trunks, fighting out of Boston, Massachusetts is Howard. 12-1-1, red/black trunks, fighting out of Makhachkala, Russia is Nurmagomedov. The ref is Mike England. Howard takes the center to start and takes tiny little steps toward Nurmagomedov, trying to land the big punch. Nurmagomedov dances on his feet and responds with jabs, letting his hands jitter up and down as he tries to fake Howard out, mixing in kicks. The overhand left is there for Nurmagomedov. Howard keeps his shoulder tucked on the left and tries to land a big right. Nurmagomedov tries to trip him to the ground and it's not there -- he eats a knee for his effort. Half of R1 is gone. Nurmagomedov shoots at 2:38 and catches Howard totally off guard for an easy takedown. Nurmagomedov gets a warning not throw his head at Howard's chin. Nurmagomedov tries to inch his way to side control as Khabib calls out advice to him from the corner. He almost has it at 4:20 but Howard gets him back to the middle. 10-9 Nurmagomedov.

Round 2: Both men touch gloves to open R2 and again Howard is taking small steps forward as Nurmagomedov circles to his left and throws a right head kick. Howard tries head hunting, Nurmagomedov tries to jump guard, and they both gain nothing and go back to neutral ground. Nurmagomedov shoots for a single and eats an elbow. Nurmagomedov lands a smacking left. Howard keeps inching forward. Nurmagomedov's double is stuffed so he throws a combo instead. Three minutes gone. Nurmagomedov's combos are crisp. Howard seems to flinch even before he gets hit. Nurmagomedov hurts him with a right elbow and Howard's knees buckle, but as he swarms on the ground Nurmagomedov is reversed and Howard gets a takedown. Nurmagomedov gets free and gets one back before the bell. 10-9 Nurmagomedov.

Round 3: Howard tries to push Nurmagomedov into the fence but breaks it off when no opportunities emerge. Nurmagomedov shoots for a single, Howard keeps his balance and widens his stance when they end up on the fence. Nurmagomedov finally gets the takedown at 1:40. Both men are warned to get busy. Nurmagomedov moves to half guard looking to improve to side control or a full mount. They're stood up at 2:35 and Howard jockeys for position with Nurmagomedov against the fence. They break at 4:12 and Howard lands a big right, then sprawls to stuff a takedown. Howard tries to jump guard and fails, letting Nurmagomedov on top for the final seconds and likely the win.

Final result: 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 all for Abubakar Nurmagomedov by unanimous decision.

Shawn Jordan vs. Ashley Gooch

Round 1: Black Dynamic Fastner trunks, 10-4, fighting out of Glendale, Arizona is Gooch. Black Alienware/Vaporfit trunks, 18-7, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Florida is Jordan. Marc Wasem is the ref. Jordan pushes forward and lands a right, which prompts a quick brawling exchange between the two before they reset. Jordan pops him with a straight left, a right elbow and two more rights. Jordan gets a single leg takedown as Gooch is backpedaling trying to recover. Jordan is trying to pull his left leg out and take a full mount but he's stuck in half guard. If he can posture up though it might be academic. Gooch is trying to defend but Jordan is hitting some good rights. Jordan takes the back as Gooch tries to get up and fires off lefts. Gooch is warned to let go of the fence. Jordan once again spins to take the back and he flattens Gooch out and starts pounding away. Gooch is warned to fight back and he is unable to stop the offense, so it's waved off with about 20 seconds left.

Final result: Shawn "The Savage" Jordan via technical knockout at 4:40 of the first round.

Chris Gutierrez vs. Timur Valiev

Round 1: Yellow trunks, 10-2, fighting out of Albuquerque, New Mexico is Valiev. Red trunks, 9-1-1, fighting out of Greenville, Texas is Gutierrez. Our referee is Dan Miragliotta. Valiev establishes Decagon control early and has Gutierrez circling on the outside. Gutierrez is staying light on his feet, moving side to side throwing leg kicks. Valiev gets a takedown off one of those kicks at 1:41. He tries hard to pass but Gutierrez keeps his knees up to keep the guard and then wraps his legs around Valiev's back. Valiev pulls free at 2:35 and nearly eats upkicks for his effort. It does pay off with him getting side control so he can hunt for submission attempts. Gutierrez thwarts it and pushes him back to guard at 3:28. Valiev tries to pull his arms free for some hammers and elbows, and I do mean PULL. He backs away at 4:13 and avoids the upkicks while throwing leg kicks. He ends up right back in closed guard again at 4:34. It's a 10-9 round for Valiev but Gutierrez escaped major damage.

Round 2: Valiev is again the aggressor and he gets a faster takedown this time at just 19 seconds. Gutierrez tries to kick him off but Valiev winds up taking his back and firing off left hands. Gutierrez tries to stand at 1:15 but Valiev throws him back to the ground 11 seconds later. Valiev tries to spin to the side but once again Gutierrez keeps him in the guard. Valiev backs off and jumps back in right where he was. Valiev keeps trying to pass to the left as Miragliotta warns both men to stay busy. He backs away again at 3:13, throws down a left hand, then dives back on top at 3:35. Gutierrez almost gets to his feet but Valiev stays heavy on his back as Valiev takes a three point stance. Gutierrez was upright for maybe a second. Miragliotta resets them with 10 seconds left so it's pointless. 10-9 Valiev.

Round 3: Gutierrez' corner told him he was down 2-0 going into the third. Valiev's corner told him he was fighting a perfect fight and to keep doing more of the same. Keep in mind though Gutierrez got an upset win the last time these two met, something that hasn't been mentioned on commentary once. Valiev scores another takedown at 1:26. Miragliotta reminds them to work. Gutierrez gets up at 2:22. Miragliotta resets them at 2:47 as there was no action when they clinched on the fence. Valiev continues to dance circles around Gutierrez, seemingly fresh enough to go another two rounds in the fight, while Gutierrez has become very flat footed. Miragliotta calls for action with 15 seconds left, Gutierrez tries to oblige, they wind up clinched, Valiev hits him with some blows, and Gutierrez tries to jump guard right at the end. 10-9 Valiev for a clean sweep.

Final result: The judges score it 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 all for Timur Valiev.

Jesse Brock vs. Bekbulat Magomedov

Round 1: Brock is 22-8 and in the gray Hayabusa trunks. Magomedov is in blue and white trunks and rushes quickly to the Decagon, sporting a 16-1 record overall. Brock fights out of Boise, Idaho. Magomedov fights out of Moscow, Russia. Our referee is Mike England. Magomedov lands a spinning backfist and Brock has to back up and regroup. It didn't wobble him but he was getting overwhelmed by a flurry for a second. Magomedov throws out a jumping knee, a leg kick, and a left hand. He switches from one thing to the next rapid fire. Magomedov gets a single leg takedown at 1:38, takes the back as Brock tries to get back up, Brock gets his feet under him at 2:05 and they trade knees against the fence. Magomedov lands a shot to the head as they break, and Brock lands a shot to the cup which causes England to call time. Magomedov is ready to go quickly, lands a right, and sweeps a leg to get on top in guard. England warns them to stay busy. Magomedov gets half guard at 3:43 but lets Brock back up in the process. Brock gets free at 4:04 and they move back toward the center. Not much happens for the rest of the round. 10-9 Magomedov.

Round 2: Brock opens R2 trying to get in Magomedov's face, but he is eating lefts from his opponent for his efforts. The size and reach factor are proving very hard for Brock to overcome in this fight. Brock gets hurt with a right hand and has to move backward again, and Magomedov follows up with a flying knee and a takedown. Brock gets up and gets free but eats a left as he stands. They clinch up against the fence as we hit the halfway point of the round. Magomedov gets a single leg and Brock pops right up. Magomedov keeps him pressed against the fence and throws knees. He throws Brock to the ground with authority at 4:06. Brock gets up at 4:28. Another 10-9 Magomedov.

Round 3: Brock is fighting like he knows he's behind on the scorecards. The problem with that is that he's not landing anything. Whenever he does mange to get into range, Magomedov lands first. He tries a takedown instead and Magomedov pops up instantly. Brock spins off the fence and throws a leg kick. Magomedov lands a combo. Brock gets a takedown and gets the back with 2:30 left. He's trying to find a submission with short time but Magomedov is defending well. The crowd starts booing because Brock can't get the finish and Magomedov can't get up, and Brock is forced to just heel kick him in the butt. They're not stood up and Magomedov scrambles to his feet right before the bell.

Final result: The judges score it 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 for Magomedov by unanimous decision.

Abu Azaitar vs. Mike Arrant

Round 1: Arrant is in black and silver trunks with blue gloves for this fight, a 15-11 record overall. Azaitar is in black trunks and is 12-1-1 overall with red gloves tonight. Arrant fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada while Azaitar fights out of Cologne, Germany. Marc Wasem is our referee. Arrant tries to back Azaitar up against the fence right away. Azaitar spins him around as they clinch against the cage. There's a lot of fighting for head position and underhooks until they break at 1:06 and Azaitar is throwing flurries until Arrant tags him with a straight right. Arrant backs him up toward the Decagon fence again and uses a leg kick to set up his power punch. Azaitar has blood coming from his left eyelid. Azaitar is trying to keep Arrant off him with leg kicks and pawing at the range but it isn't working. Arrant keeps loading up his left looking for a chance to pull the trigger. Azaitar goes for a takedown at 3:55 and gets it. Arrant gets up eats a series of lefts and is leg tripped at 4:30. Arrant ties him up as he tries to hammer away. I think Arrant won more of R1 and I'd give it to him 10-9 but I wouldn't be surprised if judges remembered the late takedowns instead.

Round 2: Arrant opens with a spinning kick and Azaitar throws a high kick in response. Both trade leg kicks. Arrant tries to go high with a couple of kicks but Azaitar is just avoiding taking them flush to the head. Azaitar comes forward with some heavy right hands and a body kick. Azaitar keeps loading up the kicks and they start talking to each other - maybe one of them strayed low to the cup. The action isn't stopped though. Azaitar is getting more accurate with his hands the longer the fight goes. Arrant may be hurt with 80 seconds left in R2. Azaitar is trying to swarm him on the fence and takes his back even though blood is spraying out of his nose all over his opponent. Now we DO get a stoppage for a low kick with 19 seconds left in the round. Arrant says he's ready to go quickly and Azaitar dances away as Arrant throws spin kicks. 10-9 Azaitar.

Round 3: Arrant tries to feel out the range with open palms as we open the third round, while Azaitar is fainting with knees and throwing body kicks as he looks for power shots. The body and leg kicks are accumulating and it's hard to ignore that Azaitar is the fresher more active man. He loses his mouthpiece and the ref momentarily stops time so he can put it back in. Arrant is backpedaling constantly now. Azaitar lands a hard right flush as we hit two minutes left in the fight. Arrant lands a good combo that pops the K.C. crowd and Azaitar resets. Azaitar goes back to the leg kicks and circles then lands a clean right hook. 10-9 Azaitar, and he may even get a clean sweep from a judge or two, but it's at least a 29-28 here.

Final result: Abu Azaitar wins a unanimous 30-27 decision from the judges.

Magomed Magomedkerimov vs. Bobby Cooper

Round 1: Cooper is in white trunks and blue gloves sporting a 13-6 record tonight, fighting out of Lee's Summit, Missouri. Magomedkerimov has white trunks but sports the red gloves and is 17-5, fighting out of Derbent, Russia. Our referee in charge is Dan Miragliotta. Magomedkerimov and Cooper circle each other for the first minute feeling out the range. Cooper works leg kicks along with his jab. The left jab for Cooper is there and the right hook is just missing. Magomedkerimov is going to be feeling the kicks to his left leg at some point - he's not checking or avoiding at all. Cooper lands a nice right hook at 2:43. Magomedkerimov shoots off a leg kick and gets a takedown to side control against the fence. Cooper gets him back to full guard and Magomedkerimov tries to back out and throw some late bombs before the bell. That late takedown may sway some judges but I'd still say 10-9 Cooper.

Round 2: Cooper and Magomedkerimov trade on the feet in the early going of R2. Magomedkerimov is throwing out more kicks as time goes on. Cooper lands a left jab flush at 1:38. Cooper tries to back Magomedkerimov into the fence. Cooper definitely wins for aggression and cage control, and his jab is there all day. Magomedkerimov tries to respond with a body kick and a leg kick. Magomedkerimov goes for a takedown and gets it at 3:40. Cooper tries to pop up, Magomedkerimov tries to take his back, he throws a couple of knees to the thigh but has to scoop Cooper up and take him down again at 4:28. Cooper keeps him in guard and Magomedkerimov tries to scramble and throw hammers late. It's close again but in my view Cooper is the better striker in each round so 10-9 Cooper.

Round 3: Ray Sefo believes Magomedkerimov is ahead in both rounds, but it's the right hand that lands on Cooper's head and rocks him that's the best strike he's landed the whole fight. Magomedkerimov follows it up with a takedown at 1:13. This time getting the takedown early gives Magomedkerimov a good argument as the round winner, and if he can improve from half guard to a better position, he might find a finish. Cooper is trying to scoot to the fence but Magomedkerimov jumps to take his back. Cooper gets back up at 3:01 and gets taken right back down. Cooper tries to tie him up so Magomedkerimov stands up and throws down bombs with a little over a minute left, but Cooper gets to the fence again and nearly gets a reversal, but Magomedkerimov counters and pushes Cooper's face hard into the mat. I score it 10-9 Magomedkerimov and I believe the judges are probably going to give one of the other two rounds to Magomedkerimov as well.

Final result: The judges score it 30-27 Magomedkerimov, 29-28 Cooper, 30-27 Magomedkerimov by split decision.

Bryce Mitchell vs. Brandon Phillips

Round 1: Phillips sports a 6-1 record and black trunks with gold lettering. Mitchell has a 6-0 record and trunks with camouflage yellow lines all over. Phillips hails from Wichita, Kansas and "Thug Nasty" Mitchell hails from Searcy, Arkansas. Our referee is Mike England. Mitchell is the aggressor from the start and pushes Phillips into the fence. The two trade knees and Phillips tries to spin his way out to no avail. Mitchell drops levels and gets a takedown at 1:05. Phillips gets his back to the fence and gets up at 1:23 but is taken right back down. Phillips takes a knee to the body but gets up at 2:06. He tries to grab a guillotine but Mitchell pops his head free and gets another takedown at 2:30. He quickly switches from full mount to the back for a rear naked choke but Phillips is able to escape. Mitchell tries to soften him up and go for an armbar, Phillips tries to escape and ends up in a triangle, he tries to escape that and ends up back in the armbar, and somehow Phillips survives all that and ends up on top at 4:05, wisely backing out at 4:15. Mitchell double legs him at 4:26. He quickly has full mount and takes the back again with 10 seconds left. 10-9 Mitchell.

Round 2: Mitchell throws out a head kick to open R2. Phillips tries to keep him at bay with left jabs and right hooks. Mitchell lands the head kick but Phillips isn't stunned. Mitchell shoots for a single and gets Phillips down at 1:23. Phillips is warned not to link his toes in the fence. Mitchell spins looking for a better position as Phillips tries to get his back to the fence. He does but Mitchell is not letting him get up this time, and carefully targeting knees to his opponent where he can, but mostly just holding him down. Mike England calls for more work. Mitchell goes for a triangle and Phillips taps out at 3:14.
