Target shoppers who wish to pay with a personal check only have a few more days to do so as the national retailer has announced plans to stop accepting the once popular payment option. According to CBS News, Target will no longer takes checks starting on July 15, a few days after the company’s Red Circle sales event ends.

The decision comes as fewer Americans are writing checks as a payment options. In 2009 it was estimated that nine out of 10 consumers wrote a check at least once a year. Today, that number is about half of all Americans. Target says it sees a low volume of checks used at it stores as well.

The company says the decision is also influenced by the number of other payment options available to customers including PayPal, Venmo and Zelle. Target will also continue to accept cash, digital wallets, credit cards, debit cards and SNAP/EBT.
