Woman dies after husband set her afire

MONROE — A woman who was severely burned in an assault by her estranged husband has died.

The Monroe Evening News reports Teresia Thompson died Friday at a hospital in Toledo, Ohio, where she had been since the attack in February. The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says the 31-year-old woman became infected from her burns.

The couple lived in Wayne County's Brownstown Township.

Police say 33-year-old Robert Thompson kidnapped his wife, who had filed for divorce. He then drove into Monroe County. Their 14-year-old son was also in their sport utility vehicle.

Robert Thompson stopped and told his son to walk away. He then doused himself, his wife and their vehicle with gasoline and set it ablaze.

The son managed to rescue Teresia Thompson, but Robert Thompson died.
