LANSING, MI -- It’s a good thing a Lapeer County woman always scans her instant lottery tickets just to be safe as she recently learned she’d won a $300,000 prize on a ticket she didn’t know was a winner.
“I play Cashword a lot, and I always scan the tickets at the store to double check them,” said the 54-year-old winner who chose to remain anonymous. “I couldn’t figure out why this Fire & Ice Cashword ticket kept saying to file a claim when I scanned it, so I gave it to the cashier to check thinking the machine was broken.
“The cashier got the same message, so I looked the ticket over again and that’s when I realized I’d won $300,000! I just kept thinking: ‘This can’t be real.’ I showed my mom, and she couldn’t believe it either!”
The winner bought her ticket at the Murphy USA, located at 579 East Genesee Street in Lapeer. With her winnings, she plans on paying off her home and paying bills.
“I’m still trying to wrap my head around winning $300,000! It feels so surreal,” said the player.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Breakfast Club lottery club which claimed a $842 million jackpot in June 2024. The members plan to use the money to buy a home in Florida and travel.
And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a Mega Millions winner worth $1 million sold in Southfield in 2023 went unclaimed. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
