Mackinac Island design shop unveils new Mackinac Bridge shirts

Threads of Mackinac, a Mackinac Island design shop that offers unique T-shirts, sweatshirts and other apparel, has rolled out a new shirt line this summer featuring Michigan’s iconic Mackinac Bridge.

Creating a design that pays homage to this landmark has long been a goal of the shop’s owners. Not a kitschy T-shirt shop, Threads creates lines of artistic designs that capture the island’s essential elements - horses, bicycles, trees, lilacs and the waterfront.

The Mackinac Bridge sits offshore of the island, its 5-mile span connecting Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

“We always knew we wanted to do something special to pay tribute to such an iconic Michigan landmark, which is why we waited almost five years to create this design,” said Micah Paldino, who opened Threads of Mackinac in 2019. “Most screen-printers recommend you only use up to three colors per a design. This design uses 10.”

The shirt line - which features long-sleeved and short-sleeved styles - is a collaboration with Anderson Design Group. The design on the front is subtle, with just the words “Mackinac Bridge.”

The illustration showing the bridge was designed by hand. “For the design itself, Threads collaborated with Anderson Design Group who handcrafted the original illustration using nothing but pencils, brushes, and stylus. The team was inspired by stately American Travel illustration from the mid-century Golden Age, a style contemporary to the 1950s when the bridge was built.”

The shirts are available in the island store, open from May through October, or online.

Can’t get enough of the Mighty Mac? The Threads team also blogs about the best spots around the island, and has some advice for those who want to find the perfect perch to marvel at the bridge.
