The hotly-anticipated remake of Patrick Swayze's cult action flick Road House has absolutely smashed a viewing record for Amazon Prime Video.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, the spectacularly violent bouncer tale has fought its way to becoming the most-watched original movie ever produced by the streamer, attracting more than a staggering 50 million viewers in its first two weekends alone. Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), the rip-roaring movie trades the 1989 original location of a small town in Missouri for an all-together more visually arresting Florida Keys.

Gyllenhaal stars as Dalton, a former UFC fighter seeking redemption from his turbulent past and penchant for violence. Scraping by on his reputation, Dalton catches the eye of Frankie (Jessica Williams), proprietor of a roadhouse in the Florida Keys, who recruits him as her new bouncer to fend off a violent gang working for crime boss Brandt (Billy Magnussen). Despite overwhelming odds, Dalton's expertise prevails against Brandt's crew. However, the situation boils over with the arrival of ruthless mercenary Knox (mixed martial artist and professional boxer Conor McGregor). Amid escalating brawls and bloodshed, the idyllic Keys become a perilous battleground surpassing Dalton's previous challenges in the UFC Octagon. The cast also includes Daniela Melchior, Joaquim De Almeida, and Lukas Gage.

'Cheesy, camp and over the top - what's not to love?'

Viewers flocked to IMDb to sing the remake's praises:

Masonsaul posted: "Road House is exactly what it needs to be. A self-serious yet simultaneously very silly modern day riff on the Western that's packed with testosterone, crunchy action and jokes in the most unexpected places."

Steven_kearns: "As a guy in his 30s who grew up watching Tango & Cash, Commando, Predator, Kick-boxer etc etc this was a cracking, no holds barred hit!"

Darapjohnson: "It's a film that doesn't take itself too seriously and it's obvious from the very beginning that it's self-aware. It knows how to laugh at itself with its over the top fight scenes and at times bad and cheesy dialogue. I'd definitely recommend this as a fun popcorn action flick if you're bored."

JK-podcast: "If you accept this as a reimagining of Road House in its own universe I think you'll have a blast. It's funny, crazy, action- packed, and a great time. Looks beautiful and expensive, too."

Ditalia70: "Grew up in the eighties with the original. Watched it many times and again recently. Didn't expect much (from the remake) but was pleasantly surprised. Had a good laugh and the main characters were good in their roles. Funny one-liners and some nice fights. Just watch it."

Tompo-75561: "Movies like this just made any more and we are the ones who lose out. Cheesy, camp and over the top dialogue and action - what's not to love? Seriously, watch this it's well worth your time."

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement to Deadline: "The groundbreaking, successful debut of Road House is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film's cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal,"

"The world is absolutely loving this entertaining, action-packed ride anchored by the performances of Jake, Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Darren Barnet, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, JD Pardo, and the rest of our stellar cast," Salke continued.

"It's great to see the film taking off with both fans of the iconic original as well as a huge turnout from new audiences. This incredible film is really giving everyone something to talk about, and we couldn't be more proud!"
