Incoming I'm A Celebrity star Frankie Dettori has confessed his campmates will have to get used to his unpredictable mood swings.
The jockey, set to be a late entry to camp at the end of the week with boxer Tony Bellew, admitted that he also needs his wife Catherine to help him stay on an even keel when he gets stroppy at home. Frankie, 52, said: "She deals with my moods too. Everybody says I’m up and down.
"I can’t really judge myself on this front because I feel that I’m normal, but everyone thinks that about themselves, I guess. Anyway, everyone says I’m up and down, and they can’t all be wrong. When I’m happy I bounce around and I want the world to love life the way I do; when I’m down I’m a grumpy bugger and I guess that infects the mood of those around me too."
The good news for his fellow celebrities is that the Italian said the extremes don't "last very long, not unless there’s something really wrong or really right in my life". In his memoir Leap of Faith, Frankie also said he had to learn to be less self-centred when he met and married his wife.
He added: "Being with Catherine changes me. Gradually I realise how selfish I’ve been about my career. That doesn’t change totally – perhaps she would say it doesn’t change all that much! – because you have to be selfish if you’re to stay at the top of your game in such a competitive arena, but at least I become aware of it and try to dial it back when I can.
"A relationship is give and take, and you can’t just take all the time. So I have to readjust myself. She also helps teach me to see the bigger picture and to find that balance I’ve been looking for, so that it’s not all or nothing. She shows me that it doesn’t have to be all racing 24/ 7 or all partying: that I can have a mix. Like normal people do, I guess.
"Before I was with her, there were three people I felt were important: me, myself and I. Now it’s two, her and me."
