BBC One's In the Club will be back for a second series next year - after the first ended with a raft of unanswered questions.

The parenting drama's five million fans were left mystified last week as the final instalment failed to wrap up several storylines - including the secret link between Hermione Norris' character and her toyboy lover's dad, played by Neil Pearson.

Now the show, written by Kay Mellor and starring Jill Halfpenny and Katherine Parkinson, will return to BBC One in 2015.

The first run, about six pregnant women who met at parenting lessons, ended with teenage mum Rosie (Hannah Midgely) throwing away her morning after pill after sleeping with her 15-year-old boyfriend again and dad-of-four Rick (Will Mellor) being jailed for 10 months. His wife Diane, played by Halfpenny, vowed to keep the house after the bank put it on the market but it was unclear how she would achieve this while coping with two older children, newborn twins, no job, a husband in prison and debts up to her eyeballs.

Elsewhere Norris' character Roanna had yet to secure her divorce settlement, which she hopes will allow her to buy her and artist lover Simon a cottage and it was unclear if Kim (Parkinson) would make a go of it with Neil (Jonathan Kerrigan) after splitting with her long-term girlfriend Susie.

Yesterday Mellor said she was “delighted” that the series would return. “On a personal note the whole experience from script to screen was such a positive one for me. It’s going to be a bit of a juggling process as I’d love to bring all the characters back but I also want to introduce some new stories.”
