Islam Makhachev looks to defend his lightweight belt tonight when he fights Dustin Poirier at UFC 302.

Makhachev has won his last 13 UFC fights and can tie a record for all-time consecutive lightweight title defences with a win against Poirier. The protege and childhood friend of UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov is currently ranked as the promotion's pound-for-pound No.1 fighter and Khabib will be in his corner tonight.

Poirier is hoping it's third time lucky in what will likely be his final bid to win an undisputed UFC world title. The perennial contender has been tapped out in both of his last world title fights and is a considerable betting underdog against Makhachev, who is unbeaten in nine years. So here's all you need to know about tonight's big fight...

Makhachev: “All his life he's been in the top-five and it's my dream to fight somebody like Dustin with a big name in this sport. I'm very happy because he's going to be in my list. He doesn't believe he can beat me and coach doesn't believe that he can beat me and I know that I can make this fight easy."

Poirier: "I feel more comfortable in this position than I ever have. I know it's big because of where I am at in my career. I'm probably not going to get another shot to climb the ladder. I've learned a lot of lessons about myself through this. How much of myself can I give to this sport, Every time I get in there I’m leaving pieces I can’t get back."
