The Philadelphia Eagles secured their first ever Super Bowl on Sunday , and one famous fan might well have been smiling down from above.

The Eagles won a thrilling game 41-33 against the New England Patriots at the US Bank Stadium in Minnesota, with quarterback Nick Foles turning in a stellar performance and Brandon Graham's sack on Tom Brady proving crucial.

It was one of the best and most exciting Super Bowls in years, and had she been around to witness it then none other than Princess Diana would have been cheering on the eventual winners.

Because it seemed as though the late Princess of Wales was a bit of an Eagles fan.

Diana was snapped wearing a green and silver Eagles jacket back in 1991, and as explained by local Philadelphia newspaper The Inquirer last year, her "support" of the team dates back to when she attended Grace Kelly's funeral in 1982.

Actress Kelly - who was from Philadelphia - attracted plenty of mourners to her funeral including Jack Edelstein, who was a family friend who happened to work as a statistician for the Eagles.

He told Diana about the team, and when she asked what colours they play in, she said that the Eagles' trademark green and silver happened to be her two favourites.

Edelstein then organised for some merchandise to be sent to her, and Diana was seen wearing the jacket outside London's Wetherby Prep School in 1991.

She then appeared on the cover of People magazine in it in 1994, with Edelstein saying: “She sent me a very nice note, how she’d been wearing them around.”

The Inquirer report states that the image of Diana in her jacket is still seen in bars across Philadelphia today, and on Sunday there were tweets claiming that she'd have approved of the Eagles' victory over the Patriots.
