There has been another frightening incident in Formula One after Kimi Raikkonen’s car caught fire during the second free practice session in Abu Dhabi.

The 41-year-old was racing as normal during FP2, before his Alfa Romeo suddenly spat fire out of the back, presumably from the engine.

The fire continued to get worse and began to move towards the body of the car, meaning Raikkonen had to act fast and pull over to escape the flames under orders from his team.

One Alfa Romeo team member could be be heard shouting through the radio: "Big fire. Get the hell out of there, quick."

A safety marshall was on hand to quickly give the fire a heavy dousing with a fire extinguisher.

Raikkonen then used the extinguisher himself, and aimed at the heart of the fire to ensure it was completely out.

The Finnish veteran did not appear to suffer any injuries as a result of the incident, and seemed to be walking fine before receiving a lift back to the paddock.

A ten-minute red flag followed as the car was towed off by a crane, and Raikkonen could face a penalty for Sunday's race.

Just two weeks ago, Romain Grosjean was lucky to escape with burns to his hands from a horror crash at 140mph crash in Bahrain, in which his car also burst into flames.

Grosjean has since announced his retirement from the sport.

It was a Mercedes one-two at the top of the leaderboard in Friday practice ahead of Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Valtteri Bottas was just 0.203 seconds quicker than team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who is in his first race back since contracting coronavirus.
