Robin van Persie quashed rumours of a Manchester United return by explaining to fans why he was back at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

The former Dutch striker is currently coaching Feyenoord Under-18s, and the sight of him taking his seat for the Aston Villa clash immediately prompted speculation that he could be part of the overhaul under Sir Jim Ratcliffe. However, the 40-year-old soon clarified that he was there for sentimental reasons rather than business ones.

Van Persie's hat-trick against Aston Villa in 2012/13 landed United's last Premier League title and the second of his three goals that night, a stunning left-foot volley from Wayne Rooney's cross-field pass, has since been etched in club folklore.

Speaking to MUTV ahead of the game, Van Persie revealed the timing of his return to Manchester was pre-planned: "Obviously, it was a bit of a coincidence that I’m here now with my wife and friends," he said.

"When I looked at the schedule I was like if I can pick that game, I will pick that game because of course our sort of shared memories we have against Villa. It was one of the most special nights personally as a Manchester United player. Villa is doing well this year so it’s a nice game to watch."

Unsurprisingly, his presence was favourably received by fans after scoring 58 times in 105 games for the Red Devils. And he admitted to feeling the warmth during his brief visit.

"It’s always nice to be back," he said. "I feel that (being part of Manchester United). "Not only in the stadium but I feel it in the streets. This afternoon I was walking in Deansgate and the love the Manchester fans still give me is incredible."

Van Persie certainly picked a game to remember for his return. In front of INEOS representative Sir David Brailsford, United seemed to be limping to another tame defeat after first half goals from John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker put Villa in control at the break.

But after the interval, the contest was turned on its head, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring twice to level matters. And then with time running out, Rasmus Hojlund finally broke his Premier League debut with a sharp left-footed finish to send the Old Trafford crowd into raptures.
