Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins has already outlined his 'dream' to one day play for Arsenal, after Liverpool were linked with his signature.

The striker is part of England's preliminary squad for EURO 2024 following the best season of his career. Watkins recorded 27 goals and 13 assists as Villa qualified for the Champions League, and elevated his profile in the process.

The 28-year-old has been subject to transfer speculation as a result, with Liverpool even said to be preparing a bid to prise the forward away from Villa Park. That move is understood not to be one the Reds are currently pursuing amid Arne Slot's arrival at Anfield, and that could yet suit Watkins.

One team eyeing a forward this summer is Arsenal as they look to once again challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title, after falling short by just two points in 2023/24. That prospect could fall in line with Watkins' long-term goals.

Speaking at the London Football Awards in 2020, while with Brentford, Watkins admitted he had some allegiance to the Gunners. "That's the dream to play for Arsenal one day. But it's a long shot," he said. "It's only because my family support them and stuff like that. But that's a long-term [goal]."

Watkins connection to Arsenal was visible earlier this month as Aston Villa secured their place in the Champions League. The Midlands side's fourth-place finish was confirmed when Man City defeated Tottenham in the final week of the season, in a game that saw Pep Guardiola's team take a crucial advantage over Arsenal in the title race.

While his teammates celebrated, Watkins could be seen looking a great deal more pensive.

Liverpool have also decided not to make a move for Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville. The Reds had been reported to be in competition with Chelsea for the Dutchman's signature.

The Whites' chairman Paraag Marathe has admitted players may need to leave Elland Road. Summerville will drive more interest than most.

"We have the funds we need to do what we need, but there will need to be some trade-offs," he said. "It’s not just outs, it’s ins as well, looking at scouting possibilities, but we need to make trade-offs. I can’t talk about specific players right now, it’s too early.

"There are certain things we need to do and we’ll make sure we are fully compliant with P and S as we always have been. We’ll have to get back to the drawing board and see what deals we need to do."
