Newcastle have agreed a compensation package with manager Alan Pardew - freeing him to re-join Crystal Palace as their next manager.

The Magpies boss saw his odds of taking over at Selhurst Park tumble on Sunday after Neil Warnock was relieved of his duties with the Eagles over the weekend.

And in a formal statement released late on Monday Newcastle confirmed they had allowed Pardew to talk to the south London club about succeeding Warnock.

"Newcastle United can confirm that Crystal Palace have made a formal approach requesting permission to speak to Alan Pardew in relation to their vacant managerial position," it read.

"The Club will make a further announcement in due course."

As revealed by Mirror Sport Pardew will double his salary at Crystal Palace – and receive a hefty survival bonus if he steers the club clear of the drop.

Palace and Newcastle thrashed out a compensation package on Monday evening for the manager to end his four-year reign at St James’ Park – a move revealed by Mirror Sport over the weekend.

But Pardew’s personal terms had already been agreed in principle with the 53-year-old expected to receive a basic £1.5million salary as well as a bonus of around £1million if the Eagles escape relegation.

He was on a relatively modest £800,000 basic salary at Toon, with large performance-related bonuses.

But his overall pay will be significantly boosted by a move to Palace – although his switch was largely due to personal and footballing reasons.

Pardew had tired of the hate campaign against him from sections of the Toon support and wanted to return to his main family home in Surrey after four years on Tyneside.

And he was also dismayed by the lack of finances likely to be available in January, with midfield star Moussa Sissoko set to be sold.

But the new boss is expected to be installed before Thursday’s visit to Aston Villa, although he may not take charge of the team until the FA Cup trip to non-league Dover on Sunday.

Steve Bruce is said to fancy the Toon job, especially with his own position at Hull in jeopardy.
