A man has been charged and another bailed by police after a violent incident left a Leeds supporter covered in blood on Sunday.

The incident happened outside Carrow Road following the 0-0 draw between Leeds and Norwich in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final. A Leeds fan in his 60s was assaulted outside the stadium and was hit by an object that was thrown at him.

Norfolk Police arrested two individuals on Sunday and have now provided an update after both clubs condemned the violence. Norfolk Police said: “One man has been charged and a second man has been bailed following an incident in Norwich yesterday afternoon 12 May 2024.

“Two men were arrested after 2pm when a man aged in his 60s reported being punched outside Norwich City FC’s stadium in Carrow Road. An object, confirmed as not being a knife, is thought to have been thrown at the victim, who suffered a cut to his chin.

“The victim was seen by paramedics at the scene and did not require further medical treatment. A man aged in his late teens was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH and a public order offence and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He has been released on bail to appear at Wymondham PIC on 13 July 2024.

“Graham Riches, 50, of Dyer Close, Horsford, Norwich, was arrested and charged for assault on an emergency worker, common assault and possession of Class A drugs. He has been bailed to appear at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on 7 June 2024.”

In a statement, Leeds said: “ Leeds United condemn any violence at football matches, which has no place in the game. The club would like to thank the emergency services for their quick response to the supporter and the swift action taken following the incident.”

A statement from Norwich on Sunday said: "Norwich City can confirm that a Leeds United supporter received medical treatment following an incident that occurred outside Carrow Road following Sunday's Sky Bet Championship play-off fixture.

"The supporter was seen by paramedics at the scene and did not require further medical treatment. Two individuals were arrested by Norfolk Police in connection with the incident. The club will now work closely with the police to fully investigate the incident, understand the facts and take appropriate action."

The match ended goalless after Junior Firpo's effort for Leeds was disallowed for a marginal offside call against striker Georginio Rutter. The second leg will take place at Elland Road at 8pm on Thursday night, with the winner playing either Southampton or West Brom at Wembley for a place in the Premier League.
