A survivor has been pulled out of rubble after a building collapsed in South Africa - and he was trapped for five days.

Gabriel Guambe, who works as a tiler, was rescued from the wreckage alive after the George building apartment block crashed down, killing 13 people. The building was still under construction, and collapsed on May 8 while an 81-strong crew were on the site.

Now, the Premier of the Western Cape Alan Winde has described the Gabriel's survival as a "miracle" - while 39 individuals still remain unaccounted for. In a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, he said: "Everybody has been wanting a miracle. Well a miracle has happened."

According to Western Cape Health MEC Nomafrench Mabombo, the search-and-rescue teams are very pleased that they were able to rescue the man, who is thankfully in a stable condition. She said: "I was with him in the ambulance and he was talking all the way. His vital, blood and sugar levels are still fine."

It is reported that Gabriel had no blood or scratches, which was a "miracle", and that he was pinned down on his back during his time in the rubble. The 33-year-old was luckily discovered by sniffer dogs on what used to be the third-floor of the building, after rescuers removed another layer of the debris.

With a number of people still unaccounted for, rescue teams have been working against the clock ever since the tragic incident occurred. After hearing a sound coming from inside they stopped the operation and began trying to communicate.

Colin Deiner, who is leading the operation, said: ""He indicated to us that he's got weight on his legs, and we're very concerned about that after such a long period of time." The video footage captured the moment the tiler was pulled out on a stretcher, and was shared online - with the rescue team described as "heroes."

In the heart-warming clip, 10 rescuers can be seen working among the wreckage before they extract the Gabriel and everyone in the surrounding area begins to clap. Thirty people have been rescued alive while thirty-eight remained unaccounted for.

As well as that, two surgeons were on site to make sure Gabriel received the best treatment once he was rescued. Furthermore, a hole was made into the rubble, so a camera and light could be fed through. He was given water while rescuers tried to sort out a plan.

His miracle rescue comes after 29-year-old Delvin Safels was freed from the rubble. Delvin caught the public's attention after he sent emotional voice notes to his parents and girlfriend, telling them how much he loved them and saying he didn't think he would come out alive.
