Librarians in Boston were stunned this week as a book finally made it's way back to a local library nearly 90 years after it was first checked out.

Watertown Free Public Library shared the surprising update on Facebook that a patron in Washington D.C. discovered a copy of the novel Hill Towns of Italy by Egerton R. Williams Jr. and returned it to the library while on a trip to Boston. The book was originally checked out of the back in January of 1934 and seemed to never make it's way back to the bookshelves until now.

The library joked that thankfully the culprit won't have to face a hefty fine since they no longer have their original policy in place. According to the post, the reader would've been charged around $656 today under their old policy which required customers to be fined two cents every extra day their book is late.

In the post, the library rehashed the modern changes they've made since nearly nine decades ago when the book was first checked out. In the front page of the book there was a message from the library that wrote "This book may be kept for FOURTEEN DAYS" to which the library clarified they now allow for a loan period for three weeks with automatic renewals.

The front page also went on to notify readers that if their book was lost or damaged in their possession then they need to pay for it out of pocket themselves strictly under their own name. But now, the library has loosened up on their guidelines saying that they "don't care" who pays for your damaged books as long as the charges for them are paid.

Underneath the update, one follower joked: "TFW [the feeling when] you get a guide book out from the local library but then never come back from Italy" referencing the overdue book which outlined tips to travelers on the best medieval hilltop towns found across Italy. The library reacted to the witty comment with a laughing emoji and agreed: "Exactly!"
