The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have urged rich nations to share coronavirus vaccines after a year of "pain" and "loss".

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will join famous names from the worlds of music, film and politics at a special concert in aid of the global vaccination effort.

The couple will serve as campaign chairs for Global Citizen's Vax Live event in Los Angeles next month, encouraging donations to Covax, which is working to provide vaccines for low and middle-income countries.

Ahead of the event Harry and Meghan said in a joint statement: "Over the past year, our world has experienced pain, loss, and struggle - together.

"Now we need to recover and heal - together.

"We can't leave anybody behind. We will all benefit, we will all be safer, when everyone, everywhere has equal access to the vaccine.

"We must pursue equitable vaccine distribution, and, in that, restore faith in our common humanity. This mission couldn't be more critical or important."

The event, which is hosted by Selena Gomez, will be broadcast on May 8 and feature musical performances by Jennifer Lopez, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters, J Balvin and HER.

Special guests, including Ben Affleck, Chrissy Teigen, David Letterman, Gayle King, Jimmy Kimmel and Sean Penn, will speak from around the world about vaccine equity.

US President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will also make special appearances, along with French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.

The World Health Organization, CEPI, and Gavi the Vaccine Alliance created the Covax scheme as a streamlined vaccine purchase system for the world’s governments.

On Friday, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, reiterated that the world’s poorest countries do not have the same access to vaccines during a videoconference on COVAX’s one year anniversary.

“Nearly 900 million vaccine doses have been administered globally, but over 81 per cent have gone to high-or upper middle-income countries, while low-income countries have received just 0.3 per cent,” said the director-general in a statement.

Rich countries like Israel have vaccinated nearly six out of ten of their population, while the UK is closing in on 50 per cent.

Dozens of other countries are struggling to get vaccine supplies to cover their healthcare workers, let alone their broader vulnerable populations.

The WHO labelled the disparities in global vaccine administration as morally irresponsible and has called upon the world to end the “vaccine nationalism.”

Harry recently returned to the UK to attend the funeral of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Meghan remained in the United States, having been advised not to fly while pregnant with their second child.
