When you're learning how to drive, one area that can be particularly daunting is parking. While it might seem like a simple task, it can be a lot harder than it looks - especially if there are other cars around.

One manoeuvre that can be particularly challenging for new drivers is the reverse parallel park, which means your parking the vehicle parallel to the road, usually in line with other vehicles. While it's generally considered one of the trickier skills for new drivers to learn, it's essential as it can come up in your driving test.

Luckily, a driving instructor at The Complete Theory Test Kit has provided a step-by-step guide which will help you nail your parallel park every time - with the help of a clever trick.

In a video uploaded to their TikTok account, one of their driving instructors shows learners how to reverse parallel park using what he calls "reference points".

These are essential for people who are just learning to drive, but won't be needed as much when you're an experienced driver and can use your own judgement.

The driving instructor explained: "It makes it a lot easier if you have clear reference points so you end up in a good position first time."

First off you need to pull up level right next to one of the parked vehicles, around a metre away. Some people use the wing mirrors as reference points.

Then, put the handbrake up, and select reverse gear, but before you move make sure to take a close took all around you to make sure there are no people around.

When it's safe, you can start reversing, but one of the main problems is that people tend to turn too early. Instead, keep reversing slowly until the first reference point, which is when the back of the other vehicle is half way across your back window.

Then you can start steering to the left once you've checked your right blind spot. In the video, the driving instructor turns the wheel round once, and continues reversing.

Continue reversing, making sure to keep looking around for safety, until the second reference point, which is when the curb starts to disappear in your left wing mirror. When that happens you can steer twice to the right.

When the vehicle is parallel with the curb you can steer once to the left, and continue reversing straight until you're in the position that you want. In the video, there is also a disclaimer that reference points will differ depending on your car, so keep that in mind.
