A body has been found in the search for a 21-year-old Royal Navy sailor days after he went missing in Scotland.

Joshua Gayton was last seen in Helensburgh, Argyll, in the early hours of April 16. The submariner, who served at the Faslane base on the Gare Loch, was captured on CCTV heading east from the centre of Helensburgh along the main seaside road towards nearby Craigendoran.

Military search and rescue crews, including a helicopter, were involved in the search, and the main pier was closed off on Sunday evening. A police launch boat was also seen on the Firth of Clyde.

A body was found on Sunday evening with one onlooker saying: "They've found him. Poor soul." Formal identification has not been carried out yet, but the sailor's family has been informed.

At the weekend, Police Scotland said its officers had fined Mr Gayton for public urination at five past midnight on Tuesday morning, shortly before he vanished. He was reported missing after he failed to turn up for work at Faslane, which is home to the UK's fleet of nuclear submarines.

In an update published on Sunday evening, the police force said the death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. Police Scotland said in a statement: "Around 6.20pm on Sunday, 21 April 2024, police received a report the body of a man had been found in water off Helensburgh.

"Formal identification has still to take place, however, the family of Joshua Gayton, last seen in Helensburgh on Tuesday, 16 April, 2024, has been notified. A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course, however, the death is not being treated as suspicious.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal." Following Mr Gayton's disappearance, a GoFundMe page was launched to help his mother Katie and his family. In a sad update on Sunday evening, Jayne Buggin, the organiser of the fundraiser, added: "It is with great sadness that a body has been found this evening.

"My thoughts are with Katie and her family. The money that we raised will help Katie and the family bring Josh home and will help towards them give him the send off he deserves."
