Brits will be sweating this week as temperatures are expected to hit the high 20s during the day in the UK. But, many will suffer more with the heat during the night when the conditions remain equally stuffy and unbearable.

One common 'hack' that has been doing the rounds, especially on social media, sees people putting things in the freezer. They will then take the items out, such as their pillow case, at night in a bid to stay cool overnight.

However, experts warn this might be doing more harm than good. James Wilson - known online as The Sleep Geek - says that while at face value, the idea of bringing something cold into the bedroom to combat the heat seems like a no-brainer, it may not entirely help you.

The sleep expert has been seen on the likes of BBC Breakfast, This Morning, Sky Sports and Channel 4. James is also the founder of Kipmate.

In a TikTok video, he said: "People seem to be obsessed about putting things in the freezer to help them sleep better. Now, it doesn't really help us sleep better and there's a couple of reasons why."

He joked that people managing to stick their entire duvet inside the kitchen appliance must have "massive freezers". But, he went on to explain the reason that 'hack' might be doing more harm than good.

He said: "Shocking your body with the extreme cold, it doesn't relax you. It puts your body into more of a wake up mode whereas lukewarm water slowly helps your body cool down."

James also pointed out that, once you drift off to sleep, the inevitable will happen. He said: "If you put something in your bed that has been in the freezer, that will melt.

"When it melts, that moisture will be in your sleeping environment which is bad for two reasons. One being that moisture during the night will heat up and make you feel hotter. The second being a soggy mess in your bed - and nobody wants that."
