When you're moving out of a rented property, or expecting a routine inspection by your landlord, it's normal to leave the place in a presentable state. It will usually involve cleaning, and some may even hire a professional to do it.

But one renter was left gobsmacked after their landlord left an extensive checklist for them to fulfil if they wanted to pass a routine property inspection.

Things like vacuuming the floor, dusting or cleaning the shower aren't unreasonable expectations – but the landlord's list went far above what most people would expect.

Setting out their expectations, which included things like wiping all the walls so they had no fingermarks and removing all the weeds from the garden, they also issued a threat if all the tasks weren't carried out.

Some of the requests were to be expected – others not so much (

The angry renter, who lives in Perth, Australia with his wife and two kids, shared the list on Reddit, titling the post 'Rental inspection item list'. The note read: "Please follow this guide for your upcoming routine inspection to ensure no cleaning items are missed.

"The list below outlines all the areas your Property Manager will be checking. Failure to have these items cleaned will result in a breach notice being issued."

The 20 item-long checklist featured detailing down to the smallest degree, including things like turning the soil in the garden and removing "all cobwebs" from both inside and outside the property.

They also wanted all the lightbulbs to be working – and all the fittings should be "wiped and free of insects".

All fans and extractor hoods had to be cleaned, as well as the oven, including glass, inside and out, plus racks and trays.

The post, which has since gone viral and attracted thousands of comments, has been flooded with outrage on the man's behalf.

One person commented: "These agents these days are a f***ing joke, just trying to justify their job. Houses are lived in. As long as they're neat and tidy, maybe extra tidy for the inspection they shouldn't be saying anything."

A second remarked: "Clearing all cobwebs from outside the property too. The hell?"

A third added: "UGH. These people are f***ing. Scum."

"Next they'll have tenants dressed in smart casual for inspection days." commented another.

Others started sharing similar experiences with landlords ludicrous demands, including "dirty laundry cleaned and put away".
