Next has confirmed a huge change to its Boxing Day sale - and it means some shoppers will have to wait longer to pick up a bargain in store.

The high street fashion giant is keeping the majority of its shops closed on Boxing Day this year - meaning some shoppers won’t be able to browse in person until December 27.

This applies to all Next stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Stores in Scotland and the Republic of Ireland won’t be closed on Boxing Day - so the Next sale will kick off on December 26 as normal in these branches.

All shoppers can also browse the Next Boxing Day sale online from December 24.

Some customers have also already had early access to the bargains if they were signed up for a Nextpay credit account by December 15.

These shoppers were able to book a VIP browsing slot to scan the discounts before the general public.

Next has 510 stores in the UK and Ireland - you can locate your nearest one by using its shop finder tool online.

A spokesperson said: "Our Sale starts online on Friday December 24th and our in-store sales starts on Monday December 27th at 6am, in the majority of our UK stores."

The Next Boxing Day sale is one of the most-loved bargain events of the year, with the retailer typically offering at least 50% off clothing, shoes and homeware.

We previously reported on one bargain hunter who explained how she bagged £105 worth of Next clothes for just £46 thanks to its sales.

Shoppers who like to browse in person will be gutted by the shake-up after Next shunned Black Friday this year - just as it did in 2020 as well.

But the fashion chain isn't alone in closing stores on December 26 this year - supermarkets including Aldi, Marks and Spencer and Morrisons are all keeping their doors shut.

Home Bargains, Wilko and Pets at Home also won't be open on Boxing Day.

Most shop who've said they're staying shut say the reason is to give workers more time to spend with family after a difficult year.

How to save money in the sales

Just because something is in a sale, it doesn't necessarily mean it is definitely a deal - you're also only really saving money if you were planning on buying that item anyway.

Before you get carried away, make sure you follow these steps before going to any Boxing Day sale:

  • Make a list of what you're after - and stick to it
  • Go through that list and ask yourself if you really do need that item
  • If you do, compare prices to see if you can get it cheaper elsewhere
