Residents of Hull have something to raise a glass to - it's the cheapest city in the UK for a pint of draught lager.

New research has found a cold one in the Yorkshire city's pubs cost just £3.75. This is over £1 less than the UK average of £4.80 given to The Mirror by the British Beer and Pub Association. Coming in second place was Coventry, £3.80, while Aberdeen, Stoke-on-Trent and Southampton all rounded off the top five with a pint of lager costing £4 there. The priciest pints were unsurprisingly found in London and cost £6.50 - 35% more than the UK average.

Firm Electric Radiators Direct, who compiled the new research, said pint prices in the capital had doubled over the past 15 years.
Brighton & Hove, Belfast, Oxford and York were also home to pricy pints. But the study said Brighton & Hove was the beer garden capital of the UK, with the seaside city having 99 spots to enjoy a brew outside.

Pint prices have been on the rise, with data from the Office for National Statistics showing they have gone up 13% in a year. Meanwhile some city centre pubs, including in London and Manchester, have sold pints for as much as £9.

Stephen Hankinson, of Electric Radiators Direct, said: "Understandably, rising costs may be persuading some to stay home and enjoy drinks in the comfort of their own garden." Nik Antona of the Campaign for Real Ale said publicans did not want to pass on high prices to loyal customers.

However, Mr Antona added: "Pubs don't wish to pass on the high prices to their loyal customers. But with the costs of goods, energy bills and staff at skyhigh levels, plus the burden of unfair business rates, closing would be the only other choice." Data from the BBPA found over 500 UK pubs had closed their doors for good last year.
