We could all do more to reduce our food waste, and it's not uncommon for many of us to end up chucking away fruit and veg that's started to go mouldy before we've had a chance to eat it.

But one home and wellbeing expert on TikTok has shared a video full of her hacks for making sure food never goes to waste - and one tip could even see your bread stay fresh for up to three weeks.

Katya Mackle explained that in order to keep your bread mould-free and stop it from drying out so quickly, all you need to do is add a stick of celery to the bag alongside your slices of bread.

She also claimed that wrapping tinfoil around the top of a banana can help boost its shelf life, as well as keeping carrots and green veggies in water, and making sure all salad is "dry and washed" before it goes into a container.

In her "food preservation tips" video, which was posted to her @katya.mackle account, she said: "I wrap the banana tails in foil so they are stored much longer.

"I store greens and carats in water, but I use special containers to keep the air flowing.

"I use the same containers for berries. I wash them in water with apple cider vinegar and wait for them to dry, and I put a paper towel at the bottom of the container so the berries don't spoil.

"In order to make the bread last longer, I use celery. The bread does not dry and does not mould for 2-3 weeks.

"I also keep salad in a container. Dry and washed. The main thing is that there is airflow."

Commenters on the video were quick to praise Katya for her ideas, with many saying they've started implementing her tricks and have already noticed "such a difference" in how long their food lasts.

One person said: "I started doing this too and it’s made such a difference."

While another added: "So cool. Great ideas!"

And a third wrote: "I love these tips!"

Others offered alternative solutions such as keeping your bread in the freezer to make it last longer while you're not using it, and using vacuum-sealed containers to keep veg fresh.

Someone commented: "If you can get vacuum-seal containers from Zwilling they're much better for keeping greens/herbs and berries. I even keep my butter and cheese in them."

To which Katya - who also posts on Instagram under the username @wellnessclub_uk - replied: "I've never heard about it, but I will check!"
