If you have been waiting for the next chapter in the Alien franchise then you are in luck.

Variety reports that the script for the third Alien prequel film is moving ahead with director Ridley Scott returning to direct, following the preceding films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Scott was the original director of the first Alien film which helped make him a household name, but the two prequel films have been divisive with critics and fans.

The new film is expected to be called Alien: Awakening according to old script details, but it is unknown if this will be the official name going ahead now that Disney has acquired the film series' studio Fox.

According to Empire, the film would have seen the return of the Engineers who want to seek revenge on the genocidal android David 8(Michael Fassbender).

Alien: Covenant ended on a cliffhanger that saw David take control of the Covenant ship with the only two human survivors of the crew - Daniels (Katherine Waterson) and Tennessee (Danny McBride) - unconscious in stasis, while he has the human embryos to colonise a habitable planet on board - along with two facehugger embryos. Daniels was aware he was posing as the kinder android Walter just as she fell unconscious.

It is unknown if Waterson or McBride will reprise their roles, but we can expect a comeback for Fassbender as his evil android.

The Alien: Covenant sequel does not currently have a release date.
