Pro Palestine protesters arrested outside Met Gala red carpet amid ceasefire negotiations

The New York Police Department arrested protesters marching in the streets of New York City as the Met Gala proceeded. Meanwhile, Palestinians were warned to evacuate Rafah

Park Avenue shut down in New York City after Palestine protest

Protesters were arrested by the New York Police Department outside of the Met Gala.

The individuals were demonstrating in support of Palestine as the Israel-Hamas war continues to rage on in Gaza. The protesters called for a free Palestine while stars arrived to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to walk the red carpet in full glam. Videos and photos of the event showed protesters displaying the Palestinian flag as they peacefully marched on the Park Avenue sidewalk, spilling on to the street.

Additional videos showed some protestors removing barricades from the area as they approached 5th Avenue. While the pro-Palestine protestors were arrested, pro-Israel protesters demonstrators gathered nearby, too. However, witnesses claimed that the police left the counter-protestors untouched.

Police arrived on the scene in response to the protest

Earlier today, Palestinians in the city of Rafah were warned to evacuate by an IDF Spokesperson. According to ABC News, Daniel Hagari said: "Tonight, we also call upon those staying in specific areas which we have communicated and defined through every means -- radio, media, internet, and flyers -- in eastern Rafah, to move towards the expanded humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi and Khan Yunis, where they will receive full humanitarian aid and where water, food, medical equipment, and shelter will be provided."

Activists have pointed out concern for the safety of those in Rafah and Gaza during tonight's Met Gala as Israeli forces have previously bombed the area during major Hollywood and sporting events, including the Super Bowl. The IDF revealed plans to carry out “targeted strikes” on "terror targets in eastern Rafah."

Hamas announced thereafter that it accepted terms in a ceasefire negotiation, but Israeli officials clarified that they did not accept the same terms. The opposing forces are at odds with their end goals, especially odds over the duration of the agreement with Hamas seeking a permanent arrangement.
