MICHAEL Fassbender will be setting pulses racing when he strips off in his latest film.

Shame tells the story of a sex addict which meant Michael had no choice but to bare all for the role - which has caused much media attention.

The 34-year-old Kerryman says he doesn't know what all the fuss is about.

But as these films prove, sex scenes and a bit of nudity still draw the audiences in and are big business for producers.

We've taken a look at some of the most controversial sex scenes on celluloid which show that getting your bits out for the cameras can have some surprising results.

NINE SONGS

KIERAN O'Brien and Margo Stilley took the idea of the natural sex scene to extremes in this film by Michael Winterbottom.

The film investigated a relationship based solely on lust between the two lead characters and as such included several very racy scenes all candidly and fully shown.

Winterbottom argued the content was "natural" but unfortunately for the actors, it was the most interesting thing about the movie.

KIDS

Larry Clark's 1995 film proved to be a bit of a shocker, especially for parents.

The opening scenes show one character, 15-year-old Telly, claiming the virginity of A 12-year-old girl and then telling his mates about it in graphic detail.

He later discovers he is HIV positive and has infected some other teenage girls.

The opening scenes and the subject matter of the film caused great controversy as parents all over the country locked up their daughters - literally.

LAST TANGO IN PARIS

This supposed romantic drama was released in 1972 by Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci.

Marlon Brando plays a recently widowed American, who begins an anonymous sexual relationship with Maria Schneider - a young Parisian woman who is soon to be married.

But even she was taken aback by the infamous butter scene which involved sodomy.

She recalled: "Marlon said to me, 'Maria, don't worry, it's just a movie'.

"But even though it wasn't real, I was crying real tears."

PERSONAL SERVICES

It seems strange to think of it now but this Julie Walters vehicle was banned in Ireland when it was first released in 1987.

Terry Jones directed the film about the life of Cynthia Payne - a legendary London madam.

But the nudity and orgy scenes had 80s Ireland reaching for the smelling salts.

These days the film is probably a lot more tame than some of our reality shows and the ban has been lifted.

BASIC INSTINCT

SHARON Stone caused uproar in this movie when she flashed her lady bits in one of the most paused clips in cinema history.

Stone was playing sex-addicted psychopath and novelist Catherine Tramel who had murder investigator Nick Curran - played by Michael Douglas - under her spell.

In 1992 it was that scene that made Sharon Stone a household name and Basic Instinct a massive hit.

Strangely she's never been short of work since.

SECRETARY

IT wasn't just another day at the office for this 2002 film.

Secretary saw Maggie Gyllenhaal play the PA whose passion was for a bit of submission.

After getting released from hospital because of her self-harming, Maggie's character Lee got a job with an eccentric solicitor.

And the two then embarked on some serious dominance and bondage to brighten up their working days.

It didn't give bosses ideas for spicing up the nine to five.

DON'T LOOK NOW

THIS 1973 horror is credited as having one of the most: 'Did they or didn't they?' sex scenes in cinema history.

It was a graphic coupling between Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie and was one of the first to imply a sex act being performed on a woman.

But both Christie and Sutherland said the sexiness was down to some good acting.

In an interview in 2005 he said the whole thing was quite clinical.

THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST

RELIGIOUS groups were horrified by Martin Scorsese's controversial film, especially as in a flashforward scene Jesus was making love with Mary Magdalene.

In Paris protesters even attacked a cinema where it was screened.

The film was banned in a number of countries including the Philippines where it is still not proscribed.

Strangely it was one of the films that escaped the attention of the Irish censors.

NINE AND A HALF WEEKS

THIS 1986 erotic drama starred Mickey Rourke Kim Bassinger and the contents of a fridge.

It raised eyebrows because of the seriously erotic acts like the scene where Rourke's character rubs ice on a blindfolded Bassinger and the famous fridge-raiding scene which involves spoon feeding and other delights.

At the time the film was considered extremely risque but there was one problem - apart from the sex scenes it wasn't very good.
