The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office serves the largest county in New England, covering 54 diverse cities and towns. We prosecute more than 39,000 cases a year in 12 district courts, 4 juvenile courts, and 2 superior courts.

Job Title          Financial Investigator

Exempt           Full Time; Exempt

Reports to      Chief, Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Unit

Location         MDAO Main Office located in Woburn, MA; some in-state travel

Position Summary

The primary goal of the financial investigator is to identify, investigate, and develop financial fraud and other economic crime prosecutions from the intake stage to the trial stage while working closely with the assigned Assistant District Attorney as well as state and local police officers and state agencies.  The financial investigator will conduct criminal investigations into potential violations of Massachusetts General Laws involving such crimes as larceny, embezzlement, forgery, violations of the Controlled Substances Act, money laundering, state conflict of interest laws, elder exploitation, and identity theft. The applicant must be adept at conducting interviews of victims, witnesses and suspects involved in criminal financial investigations as well as testifying in grand jury and in court.  The applicant must also be proficient in the examination and analysis of financial, corporate, bank, computer, and/or telephone records in order to assist the prosecutor in putting together a successful economic crime prosecution. The applicant should be proficient with Microsoft Officer and, in particular, Excel, and be able to use Office applications to create exhibits for use during trial. The applicant should have a working knowledge of the criminal justice system, and will also be responsible for drafting subpoenas for documents in order to obtain the necessary records relevant to an investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the prosecutor assigned to a financial crimes case
  • Understand and provide analysis and examinations of financial records and reports
  • Document findings in reports, case memos or case summaries
  • Work with prosecutors to draft and send document subpoenas to various financial institutions
  • Interview potential targets, victims and witnesses
  • Assist in preparing witnesses for grand jury and trial
  • Offer opinions as to the viability of potential criminal prosecutions
  • Testify in grand jury, motion hearings and trials
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement officers and prosecutors

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience in financial services or financial fraud investigations
  • Ability to analyze financial documents and create reports using Excel and other software
  • Understanding of and familiarity with accounting principles
  • A sincere interest in the public sector, the work of the MDAO, and an overall understanding of the state criminal justice system
  • The sensitive and confidential nature of our work requires strong personal character, integrity, judgment, and maturity
  • Ability to work well in a high pressure environment with multiple concurrent priorities while maintaining a high level of quality
  • A valid Massachusetts driver’s license, as limited travel within the Greater Boston area and across Middlesex County will be required from time to time

Preferred Skills/ Experience

  • CPA or equivalent experience from other employment such as a fraud investigator for a federal or state agency or private industry

Computer skills

Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel

Knowledge of Quick Books and other accounting software

Salary

This is a full time; exempt position. Salary range $55,000 to $65,000, plus benefits, based upon experience

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office provides the ability to accrue up to two weeks of paid vacation leave per year, up to 3 personal days of leave per year (depending upon the quarter of the year that one’s employment begins), 12 recognized state / federal paid holidays, and the opportunity to accrue up to 9.375 hours of paid sick leave per month.
