A 3-year-old Fremont girl reported missing Friday was found dead in San Jose on Saturday morning at a recycling facility — just a day after police found her father’s body in a nearby city.

Ellie Lorenzo was last seen around 6 p.m. Thursday at the Casa Arroyo Apartments, located at 405 Rancho Arroyo Parkway, the Fremont Police Department said.

According to the mother, the girl’s father was supposed to return her Friday night, per a custody agreement, but she learned before then that he had been found dead, according to police. She filed a missing person report at 12:25 p.m. Friday.

Around 4:38 a.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to a recycling facility in San Jose for a report of a deceased child, according to San Jose police. The homicide unit responded to the scene, and is investigating the death.

Fremont police said that the body resembled Ellie’s.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with Ellie’s family,” Fremont police said in a news release.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said he was devastated over Ellie’s death.

“I am devastated for Ellie’s mother, who is now living every parent’s worst nightmare—the loss of a child. I know as our entire city mourns with them today. Rest assured, our police department is hard at work discovering how and why this young girl’s life ended before it could truly begin,” Mahan said.

The death is being investigated by the homicide unit, San Jose police said.
