SAN JOSE — A man was killed and a woman was injured after the car they were riding in was hit with gunfire early Thursday morning, causing the vehicle to crash into a house and catch fire, police said.

According to San Jose police, officers were alerted at 4:49 a.m. to a report of gunfire and a car that collided with a residential garage on Liska Lane. The street is occupied by a mix of houses and apartment complexes, as well as medical buildings associated with the nearby Kaiser Permanente Medical Center complex at Cottle Road and Santa Teresa Boulevard.

Responding officers found a man in the driver’s seat of the now-burning vehicle, and they along with San Jose firefighters extinguished the fire and pulled the man out. He was visibly showing gunshot injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His name has not been publicly released by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office, but authorities have described him as a 39-year-old man.

While officers were investigating the crash site, police said they found a woman who got out of the car after the crash and was also suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital where she was treated for injuries police said were survivable.

Police added that there was no sign of a shooter or suspect when they arrived at Liska Lane.

The deadly shooting marks the city’s 18th homicide of the year investigated by San Jose police; at the same time in 2023, 20 homicides had been investigated.
