The U.S. must pass liability protection for essential businesses asked to stay open to support essential workers.

Protect liability of
essential businesses

As a convenience store owner in Northern California, I’ve had the opportunity to support my community by providing critical resources during this pandemic. We have kept our regular hours, which allows for emergency workers to get much-needed fuel, and essential employees working late shifts to have a reliable location to pick up food and supplies.

Lawyers have begun encouraging those impacted by the coronavirus to sue. While I agree that we should hold companies that act badly accountable, frivolous lawsuits could force businesses like mine that are doing our best to close our doors permanently.

The federal government must act quickly and pass liability protection for essential businesses that were encouraged to stay open as a part of the critical workforce infrastructure. We are counting on our elected officials in leadership positions, like Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, to support us so we can continue supporting our communities.
