Ride-share drivers safer
if they open windows

The May 10 article “Death reports show coronavirus hit San Jose’s poor, Latino neighborhoods hardest” highlights the COVID-19 risks faced by Uber and Lyft drivers.

We need effective, simple strategies to protect workers. For ride-share drivers, a simple way to reduce risks is being dangerously overlooked by Uber – specific guidance on cross ventilation.

Smaller viral particles — aerosols — have been directly implicated in COVID-19 transmission, especially in enclosed spaces with recirculating air. Keeping the windows down can disrupt these small viral particles. Meanwhile, face masks are less effective against these aerosols.

Responsible corporate guidance for ride-share services need to go beyond face masks. Specifically opening windows for a few minutes between rides and during rides, and limiting air conditioning can do more to protect drivers. The pandemic message to ride-share drivers should be clear: Wear your face mask but windows down is your best defense in the car.
