The Sunnyvale infant whose father is charged with kidnapping him and fleeing to Mexico — triggering an Amber Alert — was to be reunited with his mother Thursday, officials said.
The mother of 2-week-old Henry Guler-Romero headed to Arizona to rejoin her son after the two-day ordeal ended with the child being found safe in Mexico, Santa Clara County District Attorney media coordinator Sean Webby said.
Meanwhile prosecutors filed felony kidnapping and child abduction charges, though no arraignment has been scheduled because Mesut Guler, 22, is not yet back in California.
He was taken into custody Wednesday around 8 p.m. by Pima County sheriff’s deputies in Arizona, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said in a news release Thursday morning.
Mexican authorities found the infant and his father at a checkpoint south of the Sonoran town of Sonoyta and then alerted American authorities. The child was unharmed, Sunnyvale police said Wednesday.
The hunt began late Tuesday when the child’s mother reported him missing to Sunnyvale police. She had not seen the baby since that afternoon, when his father allegedly took him and threatened to leave the state, police said. Police say Guler has made previous threats to harm himself and Henry.
