The Terra Nova badminton team picked up its first win of the season last Tuesday by defeating Burlingame 8-7. On Thursday the Tigers lost to a talented Westmoor squad 10-5.

Sweeps in boys’ doubles and mixed doubles provided Terra Nova with their inaugural victory. Andrew Lu and Brian Lee won in No. 1 boys’ pairs 15-5, 17-14. Brothers Jonathan and Justin Sam cruised to a 15-2, 15-6 win in the No. 2 spot and the No. 3 unit of Gabe Malasig and Jeremy Chau earned a 15-8, 15-11 win.

The No. 1 girls’ doubles duo, Nicole Chan and Victoria Maung, faced off against a comparable opponent and the Tiger pair came away with a three set win, 15-9, 10-15, 15-10. Needing just one more point to win the match, Terra Nova got it from No. 2 girls’ singles Zelynn Tirona, who won in straight sets 15-5, 15-7. It was the fast match win of the season for the rapidly improving freshman and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Outstanding boys’ singles play wasn’t enough as Terra Nova lost to Westmoor. No. 1 Chris Yim won easily, 15-2, 15-5, and No. 2 Tyler Dockery won 15-11, 15-8. Daniel Yu overcame a first set loss to win 5-15, 15-10, 15-5. The othe two Tiger victories came in boys’ doubles. The Sam brothers won 17-15, 15-4, and Malasig and Chau worked hard to win 15-8, 17-15.

Even though the Burlingame win was its first of the season, Terra Nova has had some stellar performances throughout the year. The mixed doubles team of Angelo Madarang and Michelle Tin has won several matches, as has the combo of Xavier and Desiree Wong. Kelsie and Erika Reidell have done well in girls’ doubles, and Ben Ray picked up a win versus Capuchino.
