BODEGA BAY — Authorities say a woman appears to have intentionally driven her car off a cliff along Highway 1 near Bodega Bay, where she fell to her death.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office says a 28-year-old Santa Rosa woman pulled into a small parking lot at Duncan’s Cove on Sunday.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Thompson tells the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that the car was then driven straight from the lot and off the cliff, falling 60 feet to the surf below.

A state parks lifeguard found the woman’s body in the water.

The California State Parks and sheriff’s office are investigating the death, but officials on Monday said evidence suggests suicide.

Thompson said that particular stretch of Highway 1, running alongside steep cliffs, has seen a spike in suicides in recent years.
