On the same afternoon the Carlmont-Belmont softball team clinched at least a share of second place, it lost any shot at the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division title.

The Scots erased an early deficit during a 4-2 win over third-place Capuchino-San Bruno, but later found out Hillsdale-San Mateo had also won to clinch the Bay. That diminishes the importance of this week’s showdown between Carlmont and Hillsdale.

“We want to knock them off heading into CCS,” Carlmont coach Jim Liggett said. “But mostly we want to be peaking and having our kids playing well into playoffs.”

Tuesday provided a strong test for Carlmont (20-6, 10-3 Bay), which trailed 2-0 after three innings. Capuchino (17-6, 8-4) was looking to jump ahead in the standings, but the Scots tied the game in the fourth inning and Megan Hansen drove in a pair in the sixth to jump ahead — part of a 10-hit attack.

Danielle Giuliacci went the first four innings in the circle before Aurora Stottler took over to earn the win.

“I thought the kids were up for the game and played with great intenstity,” Liggett said.

The season ends Thursday at home against Hillsdale (22-4, 11-1).

“You just want to keep refining what they’re doing and get them into the proper positive attitude,” Liggett said.
