SACRAMENTO — Eight Oakland teachers were arrested Monday night and released early Tuesday morning after refusing to leave the Capitol building when it closed, according to the accounts of two teachers detained.

Betty Olson-Jones, president of the Oakland Education Association, reported that she and seven fellow union members were arrested, along with 12 other teachers and dozens of students.

Thousands of teachers are in Sacramento this week to protest continued cuts in state education funding and to call for a tax extension measure to be placed on an upcoming ballot. The weeklong series of protests is expected to culminate in a Capitol sit-in on Friday.
