MARTINEZ — The school board on Monday selected Nermin Kamel to replace the retiring Sue Mirkovich as principal of Alhambra High School.

Since 2009, Kamel has been assistant principal at San Ramon Valley High School in the San Ramon Unified School District.

Kamel, who was born in Cairo and grew up in Southern California, holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a single-subject English teaching credential from Whittier College. Kamel also has a master’s degree in education and an administrative services credential from Cal State Fullerton.

In her first teaching job, Kamel taught English for nine years at her alma mater, La Mirada High School, in La Mirada. In 2008, she was appointed vice principal of Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach.

Mirkovich, who has been principal at Alhambra for five years, is retiring at the end of the school year. She spent most of her career in Martinez, including posts as assistant principal at Alhambra and principal of Las Juntas Elementary.
