Spring is in full swing and the wildflowers are definitely in bloom! May is also National Photo Month, so why not celebrate by getting out there and exploring new territory with your camera? If you need some inspiration or tips on taking the best picture, stop in the library and check out our various print and DVD resources.

If you’re a teen (grades 7 and up), we’re offering a two-day photography workshop for free with local photographer Edwin Hacking on June 3-4 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Pacifica Sharp Park Library. The first day is an interactive photography class where you’ll learn the basics of camera controls, creative and shooting tips. The second day will be a shooting field trip around the Sharp Park neighborhood. Chosen photographs will be printed and displayed in the Library after the workshop. Seating is limited for this class, so sign up ASAP in either Pacifica Library branch (contact Kim: day@smcl.org or 355-5196).

All San Mateo County libraries offer Photoshop Elements software on the public computers. It’s a great photo editing tool that lets you create cards, photo albums, or just get the red eye out of those family photos. On Saturday, May 14, at the Pacifica Sharp Park Library we are offering a free Photoshop Elements class at 10 a.m. Join us and learn all the fun things you can do with photos in this software.

Teens can earn Community Service Hours at the Library. Come in to the Sharp Park branch and fill out an application to be an in-library volunteer or sign-up at either Pacifica branch to help this summer at our KidsWorks Craft programs doing crafts with children. The library is a great place to earn your service hours and is a wonderful way to give back to your community.

Did you know the San Mateo County Library is piloting a formalized Homebound Delivery Service at five libraries including Pacifica? Volunteers fill out applications, participate in a one-hour training, and then bring materials to homebound patrons who will have a special library card designating them as such. The library card gives them special privileges during the duration of their homebound status. Interested homebound patrons fill out an application and reader profile. Library staff will choose materials based on the profile. The homebound patron can also go online or call to make material requests. Reeba Lynn, Pacifica Libraries, (lynn@smcl.org) is the go-to person if you have any questions about the program.

Summer Reading programs for adults, children and teens start in June. This year’s theme is travel and there will be some fun prizes and programs at the Pacifica Libraries. Stay tuned for more details.
