DUBLIN — Demolition of Dublin’s public housing complex, the 150-unit Arroyo Vista development off Dougherty Road, began last week.

Demolition is expected to last through the month. Grading for the new development to take its place is expected to begin in June.

The Dublin City Council voted 5-0 in October 2009 to allow Eden Housing and Citation Homes build a public-private mix of 378 units on the 23-acre site.

It will include single-family attached and detached homes and 180 one- and four-bedroom apartments for low-income residents. Fifty of the low-income units would be set aside for seniors.

Arroyo Vista was built in 1982, but talk of redeveloping it began in 1993 after residents complained about problems with the plumbing, windows and roofs. The city decided to redevelop the land after costs to renovate were deemed too high.

Tenants were provided with relocation assistance and given first choice to move back when the new development is completed.

Eden Housing’s website says construction will begin in October.
