CONCORD — The City Council will consider a proposed smoking ban on sidewalks in the city’s downtown after it was recommended Monday by a council subcommittee.

A subcommittee made up of Mayor Laura Hoffmeister and Vice Mayor Ron Leone said the proposal to ban smoking on about 17 square blocks centered on Todos Santos Plaza should be heard by the full council.

They also directed the city’s staff to add a way for businesses and property owners to agree on designated smoking areas, so long as they do not affect neighbors and meet other criteria.

A smoking ban in the area was proposed in 2009 by a handful of downtown property owners.

The hearing date has not yet been set, but the council will consider the matter in the next few months, said City Clerk Mary Rae Lehman.
