Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common complication of diabetes and is the leading cause of blindness in US adults younger than 65 years. Clinically significant macular edema (CSME) is an important factor contributing to this vision loss. Diabetic macular edema (DME) is defined as retinal thickening within two disc diameters of the center of the macula, which results from compromise of the blood-retinal barrier due to microvascular changes in the retinal blood vessels that cause plasma constituents to leak into the surrounding retina leading to retinal edema. DME may be diagnosed in association with any stage of diabetic retinopathy (background, preproliferative, or proliferative).

How much do you know about the presentation, workup, and treatment of DME? Test your knowledge with this quick quiz.
