Heart failure (HF) develops when an abnormality of cardiac function causes the heart to fail to pump enough blood to meet the requirements of tissue metabolism or to do so only with an elevated diastolic filling pressure. This condition is highly prevalent, particularly among older patients, with approximately 56.5 million current global cases in 2021. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost half of all Americans have at least one of three key risk factors for heart disease: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and smoking. Several guidelines were updated in this area recently, and new pharmacologic and other treatments have been developed for patients at risk for HF.
Are you prepared to recognize risk factors and help prevent and manage HF in your patients? Test your knowledge with this short quiz.
