Trey Gowdy Argues for Trump Exploiting Jail Time for Political Reasons

Fox News contributor Trey Gowdy argued for former President Donald Trump to exploit his potential jail time for purely political reasons.

Gowdy is a former prosecutor turned congressman turned Fox News analyst and host. He was asked to opine on how close the RNC convention could come following Trump’s appeal and possible sentencing after he was found guilty of financial impropriety of hush money payments and election interference.

Gowdy argued that the threat of jail time is a political asset that the presumptive Republican nominee should exploit.

The conversation followed a roughly 40-minute speech Trump gave to the assembled press at Trump Tower to address his recent conviction. Bret Baier started this portion of the segment by noting the “fascinating juxtaposition” of the relatively short distance between the sentencing and the convention and “what this judge decides to do. ”

Anchor Harris Faulkner tossed to Gowdy, who summed up his position:

There’s never a good time, to have a sentencing hearing. That’s been my experience in life. You don’t ever want to appear in front of a judge. You can make the argument that that the cloud of an end custodial sentence, the threat of going to prison is what will motivate Trump voters and supporters even more. So if I’m President Trump, I continue to say, look, I’m willing to go to jail to save this country. I highlighted the Brett made note of it. He said, ‘I am willing to go to jail to save this country.’ I want to move the sentencing hearing because I want the threat of jail hanging over the convention, hanging over the election, because I want people knowing that I have been victimized by this system in your stead.

The fact that a now convicted presidential candidate can be seen as using a jail sentence as a political asset — in the eyes of so many Fox News viewers — is a stunning but still accurate assessment given today’s political climate.
