CNN’s Kate Bolduan Asks National Security Spox If Biden Can Be ‘Effective’ If He Has a ‘Cut Off Time of 8 P.M.’

White House National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby continued facing questions about President Joe Biden’s health on Tuesday following a press conference the day before where Kirby defended the president, but said he’s “uncomfortable” talking on the subject.

Kirby joined CNN on Tuesday where Kate Bolduan asked about reports that Biden told Democratic governors recently he’d like to avoid events after 8 p.m. to get more rest. The New York Times was first to report on the meeting between Biden and the governors, which comes amid calls for the president to drop from the race.

Bolduan acknowledged her question may be “uncomfortable” for Kirby, but noted Biden himself has said that age is a legitimate issue in the upcoming election.

“I can appreciate it may be uncomfortable to offer such an assessment on your boss at any point, but especially publicly and on television, but Biden himself has said for months and months that age is legitimate issue and something we saw last week is CNN is reporting that Biden told Democratic governors that part of his plan going forward after the debate was to stop scheduling events after 8 p.m. so that he could get more sleep,” Bolduan said.

The CNN host asked if “any president” can be “effective” if such parameters are in place.

Kirby pushed back on the accuracy of the reports and doubled down on declaring that the recent CNN debate is not “representative” of the boss that he works with.

“I think the White House denied those claims and that reporting, Kate, but let‘s set that aside for a second,” the White House spokesperson said. “He’s the president of the United States, commander in chief and that‘s a 24 hour job, seven days a week. And from my experience here, and I’ve seen it firsthand, on the road and here in Washington D.C., if the national security team needs to get to the president, they get to the president and it doesn’t matter what the hour on the clock says,” Kirby said. “He’s always there, he’s always available, and they have ready access to him. And he also knows that the world doesn’t take a breather after a certain time of day.”

Kirby was asked about those same reports of an early bed time for the president on Monday during a White House press briefing, bluntly answering “no” when asked if information was ever “withheld” from the president because it was too late at night and they thought he might not be able to “process it.”
